    1926 to 1949 is??? The tractor would have been a major investment and would have been expected to last for years so it could have been taken any time after 1921! The baskets could have been for seedlings which would have needed some protection against crushing, drying and so on. Looking at the bags they appear to be lumpy in the way that branches would affect them? The young lady is very pretty and as you said very well dressed for the occasion, she was probably one of the Powers and not a field hand in the making!

    Tobacco? Hamburg was the center of the German cigar making industry. William Power & Co. was a large tobacco grower.

    Swordscookie You're quite right, as always! :) I should have been more specific. Definitely think that as the tractor registration (YI 9417) is almost at the top end of the numbering, that it must have been bought and registered very close to the cut-off point for that sequence - YI 9999 was in March 1927 - hence this photo must have been taken after 1926.

    This is a big help to narrow the dating. Definitely 1926 or later. At this point the company was still called William Power & Sons. The name changed to William Power & Co. in 1942, when William senior died, and William junior took over. So, some time between 1926 and 1942! Wonder if we can do better than that even...

    Thanks to all for their comments. While the New York Times is often a fairly reliable source for the spelling of a name, the December 15, 1912 article mentioned in several comments includes misspellings. It is identified as 'Special to the New York Times', and so may have been provided by a visiting correspondent - and not well fact-checked. This photograph shows Mrs. Malcolm Strauss and her prize-winning French Bulldog Beaux Athos. Bain provides the identities as: Mrs. Malcolm Strauss and Beaux Attos, and this Dec 1912 column offers Mrs. Martin Straus and Beau Athos, where both names are incorrect. Numerous other articles in the New York Times reporting results of dog shows in great detail confirm both the name of the owner - and her husband - and her dog. A good authority for the dog's name in particular is the American Kennel Stud Book of 1913, published by the National American Kennel Club. Here he is noted as: Beaux Athos. We will amend the record to include the correct name for the bulldog.
