A Miss J Doyle is mentioned as present at meetings of the Enniscorthy National Teachers Association in 1917-1920, and before that the name occurs in list of donations to worthy causes: - e.g. 5s to the Enniscorthy Clothing Society in 1898, and 2 bottles of old wine as prizes at the Athenaeum Bazaar in 1902.
From the lists of donors it's clear that Doyle is a very common name in Enniscorthy, so I'm not saying today's Miss J. Doyle is definitely a teacher, but as soon as I saw her expression I thought 'teacher'.
In Britain until 1920, women teachers were not allowed to marry (or if they did they had to give up teaching). Was it the same in Ireland? -

To answer my own question, it seems not. James Doyle, of Marshalstown, died in 1910 aged 30, the son of Michael Doyle of Clonjordan, "and husband of Mrs. Doyle, the courteous teacher of Marshalstown schools." Not our Miss J. Doyle, but women teachers could marry without losing their job, it seems.
Release or Death, that is the option?
