he Indjalandji-Dhidhanu People have lived in the wider Camooweal area since their Dreaming ancestors formed the landscape and imbued it with its natural and cultural features. Contemporary archaeological evidence confirms that Aboriginal people have occupied this area for an extended period—estimated by scientists as many tens of thousands of years—prior to the first contact with Europeans in the early 1860s. Prior to European settlement of the region, the Georgina River and its tributaries and waterholes in the vicinity of Camooweal, including the adjacent park area, were favoured locations for long-term camping, and bases for hunting and gathering activities by Aboriginal groups from throughout the surrounding desert and semi-desert areas. The Georgina River formed part of a major Aboriginal trade route— running north-south across the country—in which the Indjalandji-Dhidhanu people and their tribal neighbours participated. Along this route, materials and resources were exchanged as part of the regional Aboriginal economy, and ceremonies to sustain the society’s socio-political and religious life were conducted. The Indjalandji-Dhidhanu people today continue to observe and uphold their traditional laws and customs. According to their traditional law, Wiliyan-ngurru National Park is associated with and traversed by a number of Dreamings (routes travelled by the ancestral spirits who shaped, and now inhabit, the landscape at key locations). The Dreamings within the park form part of a complex array of sites of significance to the Indjalandji-Dhidhanu people. These sites include the caves and waterholes, a number of burial sites, numerous camping and ceremony sites and many quarry sites for the manufacture of stone tools. Hi Vesna verencevic. What year was this taken ? Cos I'm going to ask other people about this picture and will get a different response. One person already said this picture not ever taken in camooweal. And those children are not from indjilandji dhidhanu.😃 Someone said it's a stolen picture and copy as and for indjilandji people. The Cape Bedford Mission was the first Christian mission on the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland, Australia. It is the oldest surviving mission in northern Queensland. Guugu Yimithirr (also known as Koko Yindjir, Gugu Yimidhirr, Guguyimidjir) is an Australian Aboriginal language of Hope Vale and the Cooktown area. The language region includes the local government area of the Aboriginal Shire of Hope Vale and the Shire of Cook, particularly the localities of Cape Bedford, Battle Camp and sections of the Normanby River and Annan River.[2] George Schwarz arrived in September 1887 and Wilhelm Poland in 1889. These missionaries and their wives helped stabilize the mission and make it more cohesive. The Polands ran a school at Elim, while Schwarz settled with the young men on a new outstation at Hopevale for agricultural and pastoral work. Poland and Schwarz emphasized teaching in the Guugu Yimidhirr language, and soon some of the mission girls were teaching at the school. In 1890, the Queensland government offered a £200 annual subsidy to the mission on condition that lessons be taught in English. This funding stopped in 1893, leaving Schwarz and Poland to teach the students in their choice of language. In 1900, when a government teacher arrived, English instruction resumed.
