Adavale Provisional School opened on 8 October 1888. On 1 January 1909, it became Adavale State School. It closed on 31 December 1968. The school was on Nelson Street. From 1889 to 1930, Adavale was the seat of local government, initially called Adavale Division and later the Shire of Adavale. The town was a thriving centre but, in 1917, the Western railway line did not come to the town as expected but passed further to the south where the new town of Quilpie was created along the railway line, and soon became the major town in the region while Adavale diminished. Bourbong Street Many grand and historical buildings have been built in Bundaberg since it was founded in 1867. - The Commercial Hotel was built. Later, in 1885, a new two-storeyed building renamed ‘The Grand’ was built on the same site (corner of Targo and Bourbon streets). - The original School of Arts was also built in 1871, but the current building was constructed in 1889. It is Bundaberg’s oldest public building still standing in its original form - Adam’s Hotel was built on the corner of Barolin and Bourbon streets. It was renamed Metropolitan and demolished in 1885. - 1887 Bourbon Street was developed as the main business area of Bundaberg. - 1888 The first substantial council headquarters were built in Bourbon Street (west side of the Post Office). - 1913 Bourbong Street is being described a being two chains wide with many ornate business premises and weeping fig trees. - 1915 Electric light poles are seen down the sides of Bourbong Street, with a single street light in the middle of intersections. The AWAS played an important role in intelligence, signals, ciphers, electrical and mechanical training units, heavy convoy work, anti-aircraft and coastal artillery, gun sights and searchlights. They were cooks, clerks, orderlies, canteen workers, provosts, butchers, instrument repairers, and transport and ambulance drivers. When peace was declared in 1945, these women returned full of confidence with plans for their futures, but they were not wanted in the workforce. Many were required to care for returning servicemen in the confines of the home.
