10th (Service) and 11th (Service) Battalions HLI amalgamated in 46th Brigade in 15th (Scottish) Division on 14th May 1916 as 10/11 Battalion HLI, [11th moving from 28th Brigade in 9th (Scottish) Division and dividing to provide troops to the 10th and 12th Battalions HLI so forming 10/11 Bn and 12/11 Bn].

There was evidently some action near Vermelles on 28 June 1916 as casualties suggest 9 R Dublin Fusiliers (2Lt B Reid); 6 Camerons; 9 Black Watch; Royal Scots (Lt Robert Appleby); and 8 Gordons (Pte Thomas Prentice) were all involved. Further suggesting 9th, 15th and 16th Divs. The papers of Capt Charles Weld MC, (Leinster Rifles?), wounded on 28 Jun 1916, held by the IWM may reveal more.//

Neville Newman born circa 1895 in Manchester, registered in Chorlton. In 1891 the family had been living in Chorlton-on-Medlock where Russian-born Levy (place of birth Curland - Courland? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courland#Courland_as_part_of_Russia) now a naturalised British citizen, was a Dealer in Fine Arts. They lived at 146 Rumford Street and had 2 other children: Horace aged 1 and Freeda under 1 month. They employed a Monthly Nurse and a Domestic Servant.

By 1901 the family had relocated to Glasgow and were living at 38 Park Road maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.... Neville and his brother Horace had been joined by Stanley, Joseph and 2-month old Mabel. No sign of Freeda. Levi [sic] described himself as a Fine Art Commercial Traveller and gave his birthplace as England.

National Probate records state Levy Newman of 1 West Bank Quadrant, Glasgow, Lanarkshire maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&sugexp=les;&cp=19&... died 17 September 1915 at 148 Abbey Road, Middlesex maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&sugexp=les;&pq=westban.... Administration London 9 October to Horace Bochmer [sic] Newman commercial traveller £321. (A family tree on www.ancestry.co.uk shows Horace Bohmer Newman died in Sydney, Australia in 1968).
