Aboriginal peoples are custodians of the world’s oldest cultures. The history of Aboriginal peoples prior to British colonisation was of clan or family groups with their own languages, culture and beliefs, living on, and managing their traditional lands and waters. For Queensland Aboriginal peoples, as with the other states, the colonial period brought dispossession of the land that was central to life and spiritual beliefs, as well as the destruction of the traditional way of life. Introduced diseases (previously unknown) had devastating effects on health. Removal of children from their families caused harm down the generations, and the legacy of the colonial period has been dispossession, inequality, racism, and injustice for Aboriginal peoples. Many of us take photographs. Some of us would like to think our shots are still around in 100 years. However, even a surviving image looses its meaning as time goes on.

Every photograph seems to hide a story. Some of these stories will never be discovered. The father and his daughter in this photo seem to have some kind of sad expression on their faces, though covered with a smile and a glimpse of happiness because of having that little cuddly dog.

The man in this photo is Ted Courneya. He and his brother Vern owned the Northbrook Hotel from 1946-1951 when they sold to Joe and Madeline Bolton.
Ted had two sons so these boys are likely Courneya boys.
