Clara Washington Lopp alias Lady Nicotine, goddess of pipe dreams, see the New-York tribune., January 23, 1915, Page 9, with photo. She was a nurse at front and collected 45'185 pounds of tobacco for the allied soldiers. In may 1916, her husband George Washington Lopp attacked her and the stepdaughter after a quarrel and beated both into unconsciousness, see The evening world., May 16, 1916, Final Edition, Image 3. The article says that Lopp made a fortune as professional dancing master in Paris, where he introduced the cakewalk. His wife was the daughter of the Paraguayan Minister to Paris. This photo was apparently taken on their arrival from France aboard the French Line's SS Espagne. Washington Lopp, connected with the American ambulance at Neuilly, near Paris, was arrested In Paris for beating his wife and step-daughter, Sofia Machain, with a chisel. He was released.
