This photo seems to be taken from the site of the 1878 Imperial Hotel - hotelimperial.com.au/the-hotel/history-2/ - looking NNE towards the Railway Station. The Royal Hotel (see note) was replaced by the Mount Victoria Hotel in 1914 (now the Victoria and Albert Guesthouse), and the terrace of four houses (No.22, Old Bank Building 1885) on the left of Station Street are not yet built either. beachcomber australia The c. 1875 date came from notations given while in the custody of State Rail Archives - not sure of their reasoning but it may well have been the same as yours.

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection ... and "later than" 1868, due to the railway station. 1868-1875 is a fairly tight date range!

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection More correctly the caption should read "Locomotive 5712 a member of the D57-class, 1954" From the 1924 classification the first two numerals denoted the class (ie 57 class) the last two the member of that class (ie this is the twelfth locomotive of the 57 class) and the prefix "D" denoted 4 driving axles
