I remember it well as a 9 year old spectator with my parents and younger brother as part of the crowd on the eastern side of the cove. Rather exciting way back then.

Royal Visit 1954 - Bathurst

Information via correspondence with a member of the public: The person holding the hand of Queen Elizabeth II is ... Louis Le Breton who was Station Master, Bathurst. The photo depicts the moment when he is introduced to her and he welcomes her to Bathurst. The Queen complemented him on how beautiful his Railway Station was kept. He had many healthy plants about the station and kept an immaculate Railway Station.

On 9 March 1954, Queen Elizabeth II made history by being the first-ever reigning monarch to set foot in Queensland. With her husband Prince Phillip in tow, the then 27-year-old monarch arrived in Brisbane with too much fanfare and excitement. An estimated 500,000 Queenslanders turned out to greet the newly crowned monarch. The Queen and Prince Phillip stayed at Government House in inner-west Paddington with Queensland Governor Sir John Lavarack and his wife. Lady Lavarack went on to document the visit in a two-page recollection that outlined the Queen’s convivial and pleasing nature. Source: www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/mob-sunday-stories-the-queen-...
