My The Brother went to see 84-year-old Bob Dylan in concert at Swansea a couple of weeks ago. He wasn't impressed. "The stage wasn't lit so I can't be sure. There was a disembodied voice coming from somewhere from someone who could have been a very bad Dylan impersonator." The audience was "largely disgruntled", but no rioting, no windows broken, and no officers of the law barricaded in their station house.

The biggest news of the year, the decade, and arguably the century was the visit of the newly-crowned Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Edinburgh to Bundaberg. March 11 that year was proclaimed a public holiday for the occasion. A crowd of 10,000 greeted the Royals at the airport. Then 30,000 people, at places 20-deep, lined the procession route from the hospital through the CBD and finishing at the old showgrounds. Once there, the Royals spent 15 minutes driving up and down lanes of 8000 screaming, flag-waving children. The city's oldest woman, Ellen Clarry, who'd turned 100 the previous August, was invited along with her daughter, Mrs T. Broom, who she lived with, to meet the monarch. All up, 70,000 people were thought to have turned out for a brush with the Royals. About 5000 caught trains from other areas so they could be in Rum City. Representatives of the UQ Senate, staff and students gathered at short notice in March 1954 to catch a glimpse of Prince Philip, as the Duke of Edinburgh made a whirlwind tour of the St Lucia campus. The informal UQ visit was a late addition to the 1954 royal tour of Australia, during which Prince Philip joined Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, on her first tour of Australia as British monarch. Prince Philip arrived at UQ shortly after 6 pm on 17 March and spent about one-and-a-half hours at the University, where he was received by Queensland Deputy Premier John Duggan, Chancellor Dr. Otto Hirschfeld, and Vice-Chancellor John Story AO. The Duke was then escorted to the John Darnell Art Gallery, where he was presented with a souvenir of bound photographs of UQ buildings, before moving to the library, where he met and greeted about 50 student union representatives.
