A memorial now exists at left of frame. To the left of the street running along the left edge of the frame is Lafayette hillside memorial, a memorial for veterans who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We had a lot of interest from our Archives Outside friends and have established a c.1900 date for this photo.

It is a wonderful image of the hustle and bustle of early Sydney - with trams and pre-traffic snarls.

Brian Yap The tram standing in Spit Road (middle background) is a C-class tramcar as is the car just passing out of the frame on the right towards Mosman - both power cars. The tram standing right in the junction would appear to be a non-powered trailer car. In the distance, heading towards the Spit, beyond the points,can be seen a C-class and trailer set.

this photo could be the day of the opening of the line to the Spit??

It is interesting to see that Newtown had more platforms than it does today.

The northern/far platform was removed to make way for the 2 x fast intercity tracks in 1927 in conjunction with electrification. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newtown_railway_station,_Sydney
