    Foxglove Carol Maddock One of my memories of cycling through Newry (on my way from Rosslare to Larne) some time in the early 1990s was of 4 soldiers escorting a policemen on his beat. There were 2 on each side of the road, ahead and behind the policeman, looking around them and moving from doorway to doorway. What struck me most was that the locals (including the policeman) were going about their business as if the soldiers weren't there. I suppose that for them it was just part of everyday life.

Both sides of the same coin and miles apart!

    Depending on when this was taken my own father could have been among those being escorted to the ship! He was arrested after the siege of the Strand Barracks in Limerick, imprisoned there for a while, transferred from there to Cork and thence to Dublin before ending up in Gormanstown in Co. Meath!

    There's an interesting mix of uniforms & civilian clothes in this picture. The date of the picture would suggest that this might have been part of the Battle of Kilmallock.
