There is a mention here of the following for May 3rd 1921: HMS Eglantine (Sloop) HMS Convulvulus (sloop) HMS Silene (Sloop) HMS Cicero (Sloop) HMT Ard Patrick ( Mersey Class, Naval Trawler) There was a glut of surplus warships, post-WW1. These four sloops , were among sixty of that type, being sold off from the Royal Navy. The Ard Patrick was an Admiralty trawler, also for sale. Some ships had actually been sold, when Republican forces decided to attack them at Caririgaloe, near Cobh. Armed men overpowered the civilian caretakers, and opened the seacocks on the vessels. The results were reported as ‘one vessel leaned heavily to port while another settled on the riverbed’ All vessels were sold by the end of the year.

There is a second photo Hailing a passing vessel going up the river Lee to warn them of the danger of two sunken vessels which the notes claim is a "Photographic print (embossed with "W.D. Hogan, / 56 Henry St., / Dublin." lower left) of Free State soldiers (with their backs to the camera) on board the S.S. Lady Wicklow." This would seem to indicate that it was during the Civil War, and maybe a different incident to the one I mentioned above in 1921.

It seems the image needs flipping. Also in the NLI catalogue is the same image via Messrs Keogh (unflipped with a buttonhole on the correct side) - catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000029661 . The caption for the Keogh image says "Peter Clancy (Co. Clare), Sentenced to Death, Sentence commuted to 10 Years' Penal Servitude." Which surely implies the image is 1916 or before? Better known as Peadar Clancy, he was active in the 1916 uprising. He, Dick McKee & Conor Clune we’re shot at Dublin Castle on the evening of Bloody Sunday. He was a draper by trade and had a shop on O’Connell Street called Republican Outfitters.
