The building in the back is New York Public Library, at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. Joseph H. Choate and William W. Appleton were both Trustees named in the first year of the New York Free Circulating Library. This photo may have been taken at the opening of NYPL in 1911.

I believe the 42nd Street Library opened in 1911. The architects were Carrere & Hastings. Great photo!
