The photographer's perspective is from the north side of the intersection on Madison Avenue, looking toward 42nd St. to the southwest and Cox as he approaches the intersection. The ~~Union Carbon and Carbide Building~~ Union Carbide and Carbon Building (built in 1913, demolished in 2001) serves as the backdrop for the scene. I believe the 42nd Street Library opened in 1911. The architects were Carrere & Hastings. Great photo!
