See similar photo at www.alamy.com/stock-photo-fourth-liberty-loan-parade-duri... which was taken at the fourth Liberty Loan Parade. But that didn't take place until October 12, 1918. So this is probably an earlier event at which sailors from the Pelham Bay Naval Training Station marched. Perhaps, given the poster in view, it was related to the campaign to avoid food waste.

This photo was taken on the east side of Fifth Avenue, just south of the intersection of Fifth Ave. and 42nd St.. To the left side of the frame(across the street from the photographer) would be the New York Public Library.

Date written on negative is 3/12/18 New-York tribune., March 13, 1918, Page 7 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030214/1918-03-13/ed-... has a similar picture, captioned, "One thousand recruits from the Pelham Bay Naval Training Station yesterday showed New York how they look in full equipment. The men are here for the big military and naval meet and ball at Madison Square Garden." Also stated, "They arranged to have two parades. New York saw the first yesterday. Down Fifth Avenue from Fifty-ninth Street to Twenty-sixth Street, and then east to the 69th Regiment Armory, at Lexington Avenue, swung a thousand naval reserves." The bigger parade, with other military and police units, etc. as well as these sailors, was to be on March 14 and go along Fifth Avenue in the other direction, starting at the battleship Recruit in Union Square.
