From 1964 until 1966, I lived at 12 Fifth Avenue (the building on the far right in this panorama. Apartment 1-R, behind the elevator.

No. 8, the building in the center of the photograph, was built in 1856 for John Taylor Johnston - the first marble house in New York City. Johnston was a wealthy art patron, who maintained, above the stable in the rear of the house, an art gallery which was open to the public one day each week. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art was organized in 1870, Johnston was its first president.

I really find it interesting that at the time that this building was under construction that there weren't too many other buildings around it that were very tall. Now, it is flanked by so many very tall structures and doesn't stand out as easily as it does here. However, 1912 was definitely a much different time than today. www.formworkconstruction.ca
