From 1964 until 1966, I lived at 12 Fifth Avenue (the building on the far right in this panorama. Apartment 1-R, behind the elevator.

No. 8, the building in the center of the photograph, was built in 1856 for John Taylor Johnston - the first marble house in New York City. Johnston was a wealthy art patron, who maintained, above the stable in the rear of the house, an art gallery which was open to the public one day each week. When the Metropolitan Museum of Art was organized in 1870, Johnston was its first president.

The road in the foreground is Southback of Canongate now called Holyrood Road. The junction with St John's Street and Southback of Canongate is to the left of the photographer. The stairs on the left edge lead up to Robb's Entry, a short lane which runs in a parallel direction to Holyrood Road. University of Edinburgh Building now stands on this site. Off to the right of this photograph is Winter's Land, OS Town Plan1893
