Hotel New Netherland (later Hotel Netherland) was located at the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, in Manhattan, New York City, New York, in what is now the Upper East Side Historic District. It contained the Sherry's restaurant from 1919 until its demolition in 1927.

The ca. 1912 photo in en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_New_Netherland shows a different building (or at least different facade) to the left of the hotel. The building was probably 785 Fifth Avenue. The New Britain Herald. December 06, 1924, Page 5, column 2 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82014519/1924-12-06/ed-... reports that the hotel was sold by the estate of Baron William Waldorf Astor to Frederick Brown, who paid cash for the building which was assessed by the city at $2,100,000. That accounts for the fact that Bain had the photo filed with other pictures from that month. The Evening Star. May 10, 1925, Page 18, column 6, near top chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045462/1925-05-10/ed-... reported that the hotel "closed its doors today. The building will be converted into stores and apartments." The Wikipedia article linked above indicates that the building was demolished in 1927 and replaced by a new hotel, the Sherry-Netherland, which was an apartment hotel. This is 158 and 160 Mott Street in Lower Manhattan, in what was then considered part of "Little Italy."

A look at the circa-2009 Google Street View shows 158 Mott Street's then-still extant distinctive facade and fire escape iron work.

Richard Norton and everyone else who keeps up with our Bain posts, we seem to be switching years back to 1908, but the Bain number on this is an outlier, probably a negative that was out of order. A few other LC-B2-2888 numbers date from November of 1913, so that may when this one was taken.
