    According to this September, 1917 item from The New York Clipper, he was doing recruiting and (presumably patriotic) vaudeville: "SAILOR REILLY GETS 16 WEEKS William J. Reilly, who appeared in vaudeville recently, putting over a piano-logue and aiding in the recruiting for the Navy, will receive four months' leave from the battleship Michigan on December 28.     Semaphore on the USS Recruit's Bridge Wing near the southern end of Union Square (south of E. 15th). The Greek Temple in the background is the Union Square Savings Bank built in 1907. It was designed by Henry Bacon who shortly after would design the Lincoln Memorial in DC. The building still stands and is currently the Daryl Roth Theare.
