According to the New York Times account, Commander C.A. Adams was given command of the Recruit by Vice Adm. Usher during the ceremonies, so "Capt. Jack Adams" might be Commander Adams. Mayor Mitchel cut off at right.

Commander C. A. Adams is Charles Albert Adams (1846 ? - 1929). According to that report, this is the casket being lifted onto a caisson from West Point in front of City Hall, starting a journey to St. Patrick's Cathedral and Woodlawn Cemetery. Theodore Roosevelt (who would die about 7 months later) is visible with the honorary pallbearers at center.
