"Rear Admiral Nathaniel R. Usher, of the navy yard, and a party of officers and officer's wives came alongside presently in the same sort of launches which had conveyed the Mayor. According to the New York Times account, Commander C.A. Adams was given command of the Recruit by Vice Adm. Usher during the ceremonies, so "Capt. Jack Adams" might be Commander Adams. Mayor Mitchel cut off at right.

Commander C. A. Adams is Charles Albert Adams (1846 ? - 1929).
