POINT OF INFORMATION On Wednesday 31st January 2018 the NLI Flickr Photostream with all the research and information gathered will be archived. The Irish Web has been archived by the NLI over the past several years and this has led to the archiving of the photostream. Carol has been linking the information gathered on each shot to the catalogue and now the archiving will ensure that it is preserved for future reference for those who may wish to research!

"An oast, oast house or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process. They can be found in most hop-growing (and former hop-growing) areas and are often good examples of vernacular architecture. ... They consist of a rectangular one or two storey building (the "stowage") and one or more kilns in which the hops were spread out to be dried by hot air rising from a wood or charcoal-fired below. The drying floors were thin and perforated to permit the heat to pass through and escape through a cowl in the roof which turned with the wind. The windmill to the left most likely is the 'Overveerpolder', near the 'Warmonderhek' in Warmond. Not far away from the 'Schuttersveld', military parade ground in Leiden. This particular windmill ceased to exist around 1930. Almost the same picture, in a lesser quality, can be found in the archives of the Dutch Windmill Database Organisation ( www.molendatabase.nl ). See at their website in the section of 'Database van verdwenen molens in Nederland' under 'DB nr' # 3536 to convince yourself. (this information has been made available by the help of mr L. Middelkoop of the Dutch Windmill Database)

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Holland before the year 1920 / Nederland van vóór 1920, and we'd love to have this added to the group!

The tugboat in the foreground (above) is the P.S. JUMNA, a paddlewheel steam tugboat built in 1884. It operated in Littlehampton towing sailing ships in and out of the harbor, up until 1925. [1]  The JUMNA famously appeared on numerous postcards of the day, and inspired many enthusiasts to build models of her -- including this two-person miniature in Australia:
