Bridlington Fire Station 1905 (archive ref DDX2031-3-1)

This photo is of Portland Place. The terrace house to the right is number 12 and bears the name The Fire House. A row of new build bungalows occupies the site of the fire station now. The new fire station is not, as stated, opposite the "high school" but opposite Bridlington School. The High School is the name given by locals to The High School for Girls which was on St John Street, now converted to flats

Private John William Robinson (1894-1917) of Beverley

  • Simon Williamson said:
Unfortunately the wrong details have been assigned to Private Robinson (my maternal great grandfather) See corrected details below; Private Joseph William Robinson (1885-1917) Joseph was born on 16 November 1886 in Preston near Hedon, East Yorkshire He was the son of William and Sarah Annie (nee Cherry) Robinson now living at no. 24 St. Andrew Street, Beverley. He was married to Martha Ann Woodger and they had three children. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Previously to the war he had worked as a bricklayer and a Police constable. Joseph left his wife and family for the last time on 18th April 1917 for active service and was posted to Alexandria but within 17 days he was killed when the troop ship “Transylvania” was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Vado by the German U-boat U63. His body was not found but he and follow comrades are commemorated at the Savona Memorial in Italy.
