  blackpoolbeach I was just adding a note on that device. My father who was a train guard for many years also caught the staff but he may have been a backup in case the driver or fireman (if there was one) missed it. Sometimes they were a large item like a baton and more often they were approx six inches long and carried in a pouch attached to a ring through which the catcher hooked his arm.
