Benjamin F. Hoge, Captain of the 1913 Army Football team. Unable to find anyone by the name of "Byrne" on the 1913 USMA Football roster.

Finally solved the mystery of "Byrne" in the photo. He is Louis T. Byrne (USMA Class of 1914), younger brother of Eugene A. Byrne. USMA Cadet Eugene A. Byrne died as a result of a broken back and paralysis he sustained in an October 1909 football game between West Point and Harvard. Army canceled the remainder of its 1909 football season after Cadet Byrne's death.

The photo is dated 11-25-13 -- evidently the date that the Bain News Agency circulated copies of it to their subscribers. It was not taken then, but in October, along with several others in this series that bear the date 10-23-13. Another annoyingly-underexposed shot of West Point football players:

The photographer did not time his exposures properly, so they turned out too damned dark. But at least he was consistent . . .

Could also be a problem with the scanning of the negative.

In 1908 West Point held it's graduation/commissioning on February 14 rather than in May because the Army was short on officers. This is Cullum Memorial Hall where the ceremonies were held.
