Viscount Haldane and General Townsley are leaving the old Hayes Gym. However it did not gain the name "Hayes Gym" until named in honor of Captain Thomas Jay Hayes, IV; killed in action 17 April, 1968. Here's a photo of the whole building. Entry door at left. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Old_Hayes_Gym_1910.jpg The Hayes Gym, built in 1910 is still (2009) largely intact and now a part of the larger Arvin facility. Thanks Bob and Wystan. We'll add General Townsley's name to the title the next time we update the record. Bob, that baby face of yours looks familiar from another "Life." Welcome back.

Ryan, this is the Internet so reinvention of oneself is permitted. However as you noticed there is a trail to the artist formerly known as ...

That's Judge Dickinson, and J. P. Morgan, JUNIOR. Another Bain/LOC photo of the pair: www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/4058499994/

Wystan: Thanks for the additional info. We'll add it to the record next time we update.

I wish they didn't write on the plates like that. Helpful, but... I'm sure they intended all photos to be cropped on printing...

Nice.

This is fascinating...a glimpse of the fashion statements of the rich and famous from history. I wonder if Mr. Morgan is rolling in his grave?? ;-)
