    These look like early Peerless automobiles, ca. 1909. The underlined name in handwritten script is just visible on the hubcaps of both vehicles and on a maker's plate on the chassis of the leading car (just behind the acetylene generator on the running board).

    Thanks, Rob! They're beautiful cars. Gigantic acetylene headlights, smooth tread tires in front, patterned tread in the rear. The rear tires don't match on the car in the foreground (lic. plate no. 41475). You can seem them in the other photo. www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163533044/ It's not what you'd expect on an expensive car used to chauffeur dignitaries around New York. I bet Togo noticed.
