Actually, I've just read that within Japanese culture today a person appearing to be asleep when a lecturer or presenter is speaking can signify confiednce in the speaker. I wonder if that applies to this pic of Admiral Togo.

This photo was taken on August 15, 1911. Togo is riding in the back of the car in this photo. This was taken at the Brooklyn Naval Yard just before or after he toured the dreadnought North Dakota. This was the beginning of a two week tour of seaports between Washington and Boston. Note that this is not in West Point. The car there only had three steel supports on the canopy.

These look like early Peerless automobiles, ca. 1909. The underlined name in handwritten script is just visible on the hubcaps of both vehicles and on a maker's plate on the chassis of the leading car (just behind the acetylene generator on the running board).

Thanks, Rob! They're beautiful cars. Gigantic acetylene headlights, smooth tread tires in front, patterned tread in the rear. The rear tires don't match on the car in the foreground (lic. plate no. 41475). You can seem them in the other photo. www.flickr.com/photos/library_of_congress/2163533044/ It's not what you'd expect on an expensive car used to chauffeur dignitaries around New York. I bet Togo noticed.

Morning of August 15, 1911. Togo toured the Brooklyn Naval Shipyards. According to the New York Times, August 3 1911. The Dreadnought North Dakota was in the Brooklyn Navy Yard along with the flagship Connecticut and new battleship Florida. Togo toured the northeast seaboard, visiting naval yards and with mayors in major cities for several days.
