Michal Joseph Staines, First Police Commissioner Actually quite a nice photo, for its age/date. Photographically-speaking, looks like the face was re-touched, at some point, during processing or printing or maybe sometime later. Also, too much empty white space above his head, so wonder why the photographer didn't show more below the sternum, unless he wasn't wearing any trousers. Lastly, with his chin and nose up, it makes him appear a bit supercilious and like Pinnochio, which most politicians are, anyway. It would have looked better to have had him pose looking toward the camera, chin slightly down or level and lowering the left shoulder and raising the right . . . as the way the photo looks he appears deformed. Sadly, there was no Flickr, back then and nobody to provide a bit of coaching for taking portraits. catalogue.nli.ie/Record/vtls000585551 www.bureauofmilitaryhistory.ie/reels/bmh/BMH.WS0944.pdf#p... www.generalmichaelcollins.com/life-times/rebellion/free-s... www.generalmichaelcollins.com/life-times/rebellion/an-gar... www.policehistory.com/staines.html www.generalmichaelcollins.com/life-times/albums/photo-alb...

Wikipedia says he was born in 1885 in Mayo, father Edward, mother Margaret, so this has to be him in the 1911 census, living in Dublin, working as an ironmonger's assistant.
