"Alice Brady's Skating Cap" is one of several portraits made of the actress Alice Brady over the years by Ira (Ira Lawrence) Hill (1877-1947). "Hill opened a New York studio ca.1905; 'the Cecil Beaton of his time in New York,' he photographed the wealthy and socially prominent in his studio and documented social events around the country. He photographed celebrities such as Helen Hayes and Tallulah Bankhead, and published frequently in magazines. He married a succession of five debutantes." [1] "Hill was the most important theatrical portraitist from 1913 to 1917, and a significant portraitist from 1917 to 1924, yet his aesthetic interests increasingly fixed on fashion. In full-figure images--which supplanted the Gibson Head in his posing in 1912--dress mattered as much as personality." [2]
