    Maybe it says "Byron". I at first thought it might be the “Lady Blunt” Stradivarius that was owned by the Byron family. Unfortunately since the LOC stopped posting this series of Bain images regularly, most of the experts on various topics have dropped out of contributing their time.

    I've been looking at the high-res version at LoC and the other two pictures of the same woman. I'm wondering if the fourth letter transcribed as "l" is a "t" and I'm not sure that the third letter is "i".

    The other photos do not include the violin, which makes me think that she is not a professional violinist. In www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2014717799/ she is looking at a book that has cartoon-style graphic images.

    swanq, going off your suggestion I tried some variations on the spelling. I now think this is Ruth Breton, a well known violinist at the time. I found a few other photos of her and it appears to be the same woman. Bain had another photo of her though it's taken from the side so hard to compare, www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2014714944/.
