Benevolent asylums were established in all the Australian colonies in the nineteenth century. In NSW and Victoria, they were established as religious charities. In Queensland, however, the state took responsibility, and the Queensland Benevolent Asylum Act of 1861 funded hospitals to have ‘asylum wards’. In 1865 the Colonial Government proposed that an asylum ward for the sick and poor be established at the new general hospital site at Herston. Under ‘public pressure’ the colony government decided in 1866 to relocate the asylum on a ‘temporary basis to the Dunwich Quarantine Station. Dunwich ‘Bohemia’ An exhibition exploring the artistic and literary works of three generations of the Agnew family is currently on display at the Museum . The exhibition —a collaboration with the Redland Museum — features artworks and writings, as well as a series of photographs taken in Dunwich by Philip Agnew. The Agnew family lived and worked in Dunwich for many years and were active in the cultural life of the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum. The exhibition continues over the summer. This photograph of Erna Rubinstein reading the graphic section of a newspaper was published on page 19 of The Musician, July 1922, illustrating a piece credited to Erna Rubinstein with the title "A fiddler who never knew stagefright." January 29, 1922, SECTION THREE, Page 6, column 3 chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045774/1922-01-29/ed-... her first concert in the U.S. was at the Metropolitan Opera House on Friday February 3rd, 1922. Thus it seems likely that this Bain photoshoot was in 1922.

Thanks swanq for tracking down the publication she's reading as well as when her first US concert was. I think you've established these photos were taken in 1922 so we'll change the date in the catalog record.

I looked closer at the newspaper in the photo and recognized the image at the top of the page. It's a photo of the Knickerbocker Theater in DC after the roof collapsed on January 28, 1922. We have National Photo Co. negative taken from the same angle at www.loc.gov/pictures/resource/npcc.05700/. Some newspapers didn't run a full photo page until Sunday, but this confirms it was probably taken around the time of her first US concert.
