Trying to work out exactly where this is . . . ?

Think I've got it, thanks to Google Earth, Google Maps etc - From the ridge of McMahons Point (Blues Point Road, Union Street?) looking south west towards Balmain in the distance, Goat island in the middle, Darling Harbour and the tip of Millers Point (with moored sailing ship) on the left. Since there are no Federation buildings evident (nowadays they are all over that area), it must be c.1885. Or not?

Its from north sydney. Goat island in the middle, balmain behind it, the tip of millers point on the left.

I just found this John Nepomuk Degotardi (the father) panorama of Sydney dated "before 1865", taken from the exact position as this photo. The shrub and verandah have grown since (see note), as have several houses. This photo must be 5-10 years later, about 1875-80 and also by John Degotardi Snr ? acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=439957

beachcomber australia Good find! Maybe it's by a young Degotardi Jr. (born 1860), replicating his father's earlier panorama? In fact, maybe it's by the both of them?

So glad you have posted this to Flickr - I have been looking for it here all week, because it is yet another photo which very closely matches a ca.1902 painting by Julian Ashton -

In the news currently due to the Historic Houses Trust exhibition "Painting The Rocks' -

Apart from the history (this picturesque corner of Millers Point was demolished to make way for Hickson Road), this is a wonderful photo with amazing composition, curves and perspectives. How to make old 'slums' look beautiful . John Degotardi Jnr photographer? -

A certain someone, who will remain nameless [ahem], might just have made a special request.
