Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Although not very clear, it is enough for me to make out at least the poster at right is an election poster for Will Daley, which would date the photo to c.1901.

'Union is Strength' can be made out towards the top, and 'Will Daley' at the bottom, if you compare with one of the known election poster formats, using the zoom facility on this Powerhouse image - www.powerhousemuseum.com/collection/database/?irn=379076 -

Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection Thanks for the larger size. pellethepoet - Good work! A fine distinction between bubbler and fountain. That image link mentions a 1891 list of fountains including one at "Prince’s street, near Public School". I think it is most likely to be 1901. There are many photos of Princes Street, almost every building, and several photos are marked 'Sept 1901'. Hence the tatty Election Posters. One photo is dated "11.9.01".
But there's a problem - the buildings don't match for the supposedly same stretch of street. I can't yet prove it, but I think THIS photo is misnamed, and is from further north on Princes Street. Work in progress . . .
