    Judging by the deteriorating state of the Will Daley election poster, I think we can safely say this photo dates to after 31/10/1901, when another photo was taken on Cambridge Street
    and where the same poster can be seen to be almost intact.

    This is good - a Will Daley poster which was already looking tatty by 7/8/1901. I was trying to think how long a paper poster might last in full sun in the winter. It was a Wednesday.

    Not quite on the corner of Gloucester and Cumberland Street, rather Gloucester and Cumberland Lane (formerly Cribbs Lane). The Australian Hotel is further back to the right of this photo. The Whalers Arms Hotel was across from Susannah Place, as can be seen here where the new YHA development on The Dig Site is. This is my favourite photo of The Whalers Arms, its so evocative. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was operating as a lodging house in 1901. The more things change the more they stay the same!
