    Golly gee whizz - what an atmospheric photo - John Degotardi Jnr gets my respect yet again. He was good. This photo reminds me of Russell Drysdale paintings, fifty years before they happened. I think this is near the kink in Gloucester Street above Atherden Street, now known as Gloucester Walk. Miles or Myles buildings around the corner to the left. Are the barrels and tubs for night soil as there is no back alley? $#it happens!

    It's interesting to play Spot The Differences with these two photos. They were definitely taken on different days - see the patterns on the road surface, and the pot plants in the pub windows. And of course, the children.

    It may be on the eastern side of Gloucester Street, between Section 77 and Section 78 on this 1889 map. - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/_zoomify/2008/D00663/a1367459.html Note the footprint of the buildings, especially the wall. The building beyond though not on the map may have been built on the vacant block of land - it looks to be 1890s construction to me. If so, the view is looking south.
