On the corner of Gloucester and Cumberland Streets, where the Australian Hotel now is.

Not quite on the corner of Gloucester and Cumberland Street, rather Gloucester and Cumberland Lane (formerly Cribbs Lane). The Australian Hotel is further back to the right of this photo. The Whalers Arms Hotel was across from Susannah Place, as can be seen here where the new YHA development on The Dig Site is. This is my favourite photo of The Whalers Arms, its so evocative. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was operating as a lodging house in 1901. The more things change the more they stay the same!

As we all know there has never been a shortage of hotels in The Rocks!

The shadowy, bearded figure stnding on the balcony may be her youngest son, Waler. (C.H. Photo taken at 12:20 on 13 August 1901. It was a Tuesday.

This photograph sure got around. The State Library of Victoria have a print too.

See J. J. Hilder's watercolour Frog Hollow, The Rocks, Sydney (1910) in 'The Heritage of J. J. Hilder' by Brett Hilder (Sydney : Ure Smith, 1966), pp. 52-53. In 1965 this was in a private collection in NSW, but the National Gallery of Victoria and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery also have versions of this work, executed 1910 and 1912 respectively. Alas none online ...

Photographer John Degotardi Jnr was on top of the 'Harts Pub' (as now is). Hence the unusual height.
