Not quite on the corner of Gloucester and Cumberland Street, rather Gloucester and Cumberland Lane (formerly Cribbs Lane). The Australian Hotel is further back to the right of this photo. The Whalers Arms Hotel was across from Susannah Place, as can be seen here where the new YHA development on The Dig Site is. This is my favourite photo of The Whalers Arms, its so evocative. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was operating as a lodging house in 1901. The more things change the more they stay the same!
