    It's interesting to play Spot The Differences with these two photos. They were definitely taken on different days - see the patterns on the road surface, and the pot plants in the pub windows. And of course, the children.

    It may be on the eastern side of Gloucester Street, between Section 77 and Section 78 on this 1889 map. - acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/_zoomify/2008/D00663/a1367459.html Note the footprint of the buildings, especially the wall. The building beyond though not on the map may have been built on the vacant block of land - it looks to be 1890s construction to me. If so, the view is looking south.

    Not quite on the corner of Gloucester and Cumberland Street, rather Gloucester and Cumberland Lane (formerly Cribbs Lane). The Australian Hotel is further back to the right of this photo. The Whalers Arms Hotel was across from Susannah Place, as can be seen here where the new YHA development on The Dig Site is. This is my favourite photo of The Whalers Arms, its so evocative. I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was operating as a lodging house in 1901. The more things change the more they stay the same!
