Alleyway off Princess* St., Rocks area (c.1910s) by Harold Cazneaux [NLA: nla.pic-an2346091-2] [*note: Princes]

The name of the alley was Matthew Place. The lane led to Upper Fort Street. There is a drawing by Sydney Ure Smith titled 'Corner Matthew Place and Princes St. (demolished)' in 'Glimpses of Old Sydney' by Charles H. Bertie (Sydney : Art in Australia, 1928), plate 3. The lamp post and the lane bollard are not present in the drawing.

This photo was recently determined to be part of the Rocks Resumption photographic survey, the title and date of the image has been changed accordingly Here is a map of the Rocks Resumption area (last one in the sequence)

It's Princes Street, not princess (ie male, not female). Nice collection mind.

Wow--my wife and I got our wedding rings in a shop that would have been on the right side of this photo--though it *probably* wasn't there when the photo was taken ;) Also, in other photos it actually is described as (and spelled) "Princess Street." Perhaps it used to be called that?

No, it was named after two Princes.

1. beachcomber australia As a young and idealistic first time candidate, personally well-known and highly respected by the people of his electorate, I certainly would, whether or not his party was disintegrating around him. But then again, if W. E. Johnson was running too, I'd be in a bit of a dilemma, as I'd likely know him through our mutual interest in photographing Sydney (he'd likely be a contact on Flickr!) :) 2. beachcomber australia A quick consult of The Plan Showing the "Rocks" Resumption confirms your calculations are spot on. The lane is Little Essex Street running down towards Upper Fort Street.

1. pellethepoet Ha! I don't think I would trust W.E. Johnson as a pollie - it is difficult to trust someone who has a tendency to date his artworks a little earlier than they are! 2. pellethepoet Beg to differ - the laneway (for which I know you have a special fondness and fascination) is the dotted line marked on the map between 91 and 89 (it is not easy to read). I wonder if John Degotardi Junior (the photographer) was joking with his title "95 1/2"?
