His father, Francis Edward Ainger had died at the age of 46 in 1905 whilst at Whitley Bay, Northumberland. Catherine Mary Grey Ainger died in 1942 in Edinburgh. She was the daughter of the Right Rev. Henry Alexander Douglas, Bishop of Bombay and had been born in Cape Colony (Cape Town). Relative named as Rev Walter Henry Ainger was her brother-in-law. There is an online family tree which shows that FE was born at St Bees, Cumberland and married CMG in 1894 in London. The tree only shows one son: Henry Douglas born in 1899 in Sparsholt, Hampshire. National Archives holds a WWII SOE file on HD born 28 May 1899 discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/Details?uri=C9... Herbert was also born in Sparshot in 1895. At the time of the 1901 census he and Caroline Ainger aged 4 were at an address in St Bride's, Pembrokeshire where they were described as cousins of 58 year old Grace Elizabeth, Baroness Kensington. By 1911 he was a 16 year old pupil at Giggleswick School in Yorkshire. He is also shown on the return with his mother and siblings at Duncraig, Ben Rhydding, Ilkley.

Herbert's sister, Elsie Caroline Mary Ainger died 20 Jul 1988 at the age of 92. Born 19 May 1896 in Sparsholt.

Herbert Cecil Ainger (b. 1895) was a Cadet in Giggleswick School. O.T.C. 1910-11 (aged 15-16). Student of Science, at Edinburgh University 1913-14. O.T.C. Engineers, Dec. 1913 to Nov. 1914. Enlisted in 1st/5th Royal Scots, as a Private soldier Sept. 1914. Commissioned into 3rd Battalion Royal Scots as a 2nd Lieut. March 1915; Transferred as a Lieutenant in 1916. to the R.F.C. as an Observer, 1916; Qualified as a Pilot March 1917. France. Killed in Flanders on 4th October 1917. //
