Museums of History NSW - State Archives Collection There is a photo in your collection titled 'Unidentified passenger liner berthed at Dalgety's Wharf, Millers Point (NSW)' which shows the same event.

Though unidentified it does have the correct date of 8 May 1903.

It may be of interest that the Medic, of the White Star Line, was involved in a controversial famous prank in 1900, perpetrated by Charles Lightoller, who later went on to be the most senior surviving officer of the ill-fated Titanic.

Well spotted pellethepoet. Many of the architectural features of the wharf buildings are similar to those of workers' family cottages which were also built in Millers Point around this time after the bubonic plague induced demolitions. The cottages still exist today as NSW state government owned public housing

I thought this might have been at one of the new finger wharves in Walsh Bay, but no, Dalgety's and the White Star Line wharves were on the west side of Miller's Point. I can't help noticing the similarities in composition, perspective, subject, date, etc, with this photo - . Same photographer, John Degotardi Jnr?

I think this from St Phillips Church tower looking NW, hence the height. Not from Observatory Hill as described in the Persistent URL. Most of the features, including the Australian Gas Light Company (AGL) gasometer, show up on the 1890 John Sands map - www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview?pi=nla.map-rm1280-s1-sd&rg...

I agree with 'beachcomberaustralia' - definitely from St Philip's Tower. Interesting that the AGL site is still controversial in 2011 - over who has to pay for the cleanup before Barangaroo can proceed!

Yikes! That's an interesting one. Guessing it is looking west east up Bettington Street towards the Observatory. Or not ??

The shadow of the chimneys and dormer windows of these houses were noted before by pellethepoet on this "c.1910" photo of the Kindergarten across the street. Which means the houses survived for quite a while after 1901.
