The air seems more polluted than today. The downside of concentrations of coal-fired furnaces and steam boilers and locomotives.

I think those are railway sheds if anything. It was a popular view - Henry King (c.1888?) - Arthur Phillips (c.1895?) Charles Kerry (c.1900?) Guessing Mr Hall's photo at about 1910?

Wait a minute - the railway opened in 1893 and I think they are building it here. The large size shows what looks to be stacks of rails. So 1892? That makes more sense with the square riggers in the background. Andy Brill It looks like a westerly wind, so all the smoke and filth from Balmain area is blowing towards the north shore.

The MEGANTIC made just one trip to Australia, bringing home returning servicemen - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15867280 . She was built in 1908 for the UK - Canada run, survived torpedoes in WW1, laid up in 1933 - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Megantic_(1908)

beachcomber australia Thanks Beachcomber, we thought it would be about 1920. I am sure Wilkinson noted a date for this one too - he seems to have been quite meticulous - but it must have been lost along the way.

It docked in Sydney at ANZAC Bench, Wooloomooloo, and disembarked returning serviceman, but also war brides from the UK, my grandmother, Margaret Olwen Hughes, was one such. .I think this was the only WW1 war bride ship from the UK to Australia.
