The location appears to be very Sydney Harbour, so not Port Chalmers. Is the ship Port Chalmers?

Dale Yes! See the large size. Location - Athol Bight, see Macquarie Lighthouse left horizon and Kincoppal Rose Bay at centre. The photographer was possibly on Cremorne Point, see shrubbery at right. There seem to have been several SS PORT CHALMERS - I am betting this one is the 1891 ship, probably when she was quite new. Details - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13856265

If you go to the original size image and then magnify the bow somewhat, you can make out dim letters that appear to read "PORT CHALMERS."

On the 8th February 1943 when on route from ST JOHN (N.B.) & HALIFAX for HULL in Convoy SC-118 and carrying a cargo of 6,500 tons of grain & mails and military stores she was torpedoed by German submarine U-402 and sunk. 34 crew lost from a total of 38.
