Which gives us an end date: 1920-1927. Unless, of course, they didn't remove their painted sign from the building right away? ...

    Aha! It looks like they are filling in Darling Harbour. Get out your magnifying glasses and look at the large size of this wonderful "c.1927" map, which has marked a "PROPOSED ROAD" between Pyrmont and Bathurst Street. South of that, in small print is "Under reclaimation Gillespie Bros & Co. by AUSS[?] & Co's Wharf Railway Department", which might explain the provenance of this photo via the State Railway Authority Archives 17420 Series. So I vote for c.1927.

    This in on Sussex Street / Hickson Road, near Napoleon Street; a new frontage on the wharf building after the realignment of the way at the Grafton Bond Stores, south of the old gas works, and the completion of Hickson Road, circa 1930; all gone now for James Packer's edifice and the Barangaroo development …
