    LOC -- Bain's original caption is incorrect. Close scrutiny of the sign shows that the fundraising drive is for both the YMCA -- AND the YWCA. There is an M perched directly above the W on the sign. It should properly be rendered YM/YWCA, or YMCA/YWCA.

    The fundraising "clock" sign was positioned on a prominent corner, but this was the Wall Street construction site for the new headquarters of J. P. Morgan -- not the site of the future YM/YWCA. The address on the sign, 25 Broad Street, was the location of the existing YMCA headquarters, not of the J. P. Morgan erection. New York's four-million-dollar whirlwind campaign for a new YM/YWCA was the largest fundraising project in world history up to that time. Campaign "clocks" like the one shown here were erected at various strategic locations to keep the project in the public eye. Liberty Loan Clock (LOC)

    This depicts the Liberty Loan Clock installed on the New York Federal Hall (formerly Treasury Building). The clock was installed as part of the second Liberty Loan Drive in October 1917 (catalog.archives.gov/id/45493130), however despite the scaffolding and band I do not believe the images are taken on the same day.

    In this image the "New York District Total" is just over $475 million and the "Total US" is around $1.5 billion. As of October 20 $605 million was raised with $60 million in the last day. (New-York tribune. [volume] (New York [N.Y.]), 20 Oct. 1917. Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers. Lib. of Congress. chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83030214/1917-10-20/ed-...) so the photo would likely be a few days before October 20, 1917.

    A number of fundraising efforts were held at this location and we have photos (and I believe an unscanned drawing) of some.
