But old Lawson Street is found on this late 1920s map near the kink in Bowman, between Harris and Point. The warehouse was on steep ground, hence 4 floors on one end and six on the other (a popular arrangement for wool stores, using gravity to go through the various processes). GoogleMapsStreetView - imagination required! - goo.gl/maps/ka1ip

As I understand it, the store is described - "The solid rock has been hewn out to a great extent, the material being used for building is a magnificent rock-faced stone. The store 70ft. by 130 six storeys high." Then the article describes the workshop building "distant 100 yards or more" with all the steam apparatus etc. This large building (five storeys on the water side?) is seen on the birds-eye view above the words of Herbert St, with three-pointed roof and tall chimney (a hint for the steam engine), and it looks like it is made of timber and galvanised iron as described in the SMH. So I think no later additions of substance. No idea what happened to the sandstone - there was no shortage of it in the area. Similar stonework and blocks are seen on what is now part of Pirrama Road - the whole area has been landscaped to death, but evidence of previous lifeforms is visible on a whizz-round via GoogleMapsStreetView - goo.gl/maps/thPiK . I've said it before - you have got to love this armchair industrial archaeology !
