Very unusual angle used on this shot which makes for an interesting photo.The element of movement has been captured beautifully. Such a shame this vibrant "hub" of the town could not have been saved in the mould of say 'Beamish', as a current day tourist attraction. My mother worked in The Empire Theatre and loved the old place.

Thankfully the building has been listed as a Grade II The full list of Grade listed buildings and monuments for Hartlepool can be viewed as a PDF on the council website there's quite a few interesting ones on there www.hartlepool.gov.uk/download/7224/hartlepools_listed_bu... They knew how to build stuff back in the old days, a real temple of finance this one. In once proud towns like Hartlepool (and Darlington) banks used to use their financial might to build spectacularly ostentatios buildings and support British craftsmanship and industry in the process. After enduring the terrible side effects of speculative over-leveraged neoliberal economic mania for three decades these northern communities now face the economic and social blight of austerity I'd be glad to say that I'm away from the North East, but the situation is even worse in here in Spain, 23% unemployment and a right wing government reduced to begging and pleading with their IMF and European Central Bank creditors to stop insisting on even more economically toxic austerity measures. Ooops, that turned into a bit of a diatribe against the amoral free-marketeers. Keep on posting these fascinating pictures.

Wonderfully imposing building presumably built to signify the strength and endurance of the bank. I think ethics was higher on the agenda in those days.
