The Woolloongabba Cricket Ground, aka THE GABBA, was established in 1895, with a capacity of 37,000, lush grassy banks, and beautiful Moreton Bay fig trees for shade. The first match was played on 19 December 1896 between Parliament and The Press, resulting in a tie with 61 runs each. The first Test Match was on 27 November 1931 against South Africa. There have been many memorable moments at the Gabba over the years. One of the most significant was the famous 1960 Tied Test between Australia and the West Indies played 9-14 December in which Richie Benaud was a stand-out. The grass and fig trees of the original Gabba ground have sadly been replaced by modern concrete stands and facilities – capacity has also been increased to 42,000. History of the Queensland Police In 1907 The Patrol was the first motorized vessel used by the Brisbane Water Police. She was capable of 8 knots (15 km/h; 9.2 mph).[1] Constable Charles Watson and a tracker followed suspected murderer J. W. Patterson for 350 miles (560 km). They captured the fugitive but had very little food or water for the last 100 miles (160 km) of the chase.[1] A new Figure-of-8 style handcuff was introduced.[1] In 1907, Police Commissioner William Cahill and the Deputy Queensland Government Architect designed the Queensland Police Station badge based on the police cap badge of the time. The Bundaberg Regional Council (‘the Council’) identified the need to relocate the existing Bundaberg Showgrounds facility to save maintenance costs by providing a single multi-purpose facility to replace the existing showgrounds infrastructure that had reached the end of its useful life. The project is set to provide the opportunity to upgrade sporting and recreational infrastructure for the benefit of the Bundaberg community. The Council initiated plans for the redevelopment of the Bundaberg City Showgrounds back in November 2012, to create a multimillion-dollar facility, including parklands and car parking, on the site. Residents of Bundaberg were invited to provide ideas and initiatives regarding just how the former Showgrounds land should be utilized for the benefit of the community and future generations. The site plans include a roofed equestrian facility that will attract significant events from throughout the region and state. Annual events are expected to attract over 3,000 competitors and accompanying friends and family, greatly assisting sporting tourism and the region's overall profile. The new and enhanced community recreational infrastructure will promote greater community participation. Increased activity at the proposed facility will also generate greater interaction amongst different user groups and individuals, fostering superior social inclusions amongst all demographics.
