Had fun working this one out - Glebe Island Bridge (1903+) in the background, Johnstone's Bay in the middle, from Balmain looking south. Wonder what and when that floating dry dock was?

It was called the Jubilee Dock, built 1887 (Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee). Fascinating!

It's almost impossible to visualize this bay from GoogleMaps and satellite view as there has been so much land reclamation in the area. It is easier to see on this 1907 interactive map - the bay is just to the south of "BALMAIN Terminus" in red ink - www.nla.gov.au/apps/cdview/?pi=nla.map-db66-sd&rgn=0....

beachcomber australia Thanks Beachcomber, this one would have been a challenge :) There is still a 'Jubilee Street' in that area, (just had a squix on Google maps). Thank you for the link to the NLA map - it is so amazing just how much the landscape in that area has changed!

Johnstone's Bay looked much more rural when George Halstead painted it 1865-1870: from State Library: acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=456536 and in photos c1870 also from State Library: acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=63515 and acms.sl.nsw.gov.au/item/itemLarge.aspx?itemID=413663 The house in these 3 photos, at top right with the garret windows, is 'Hampton Villa' built c1847 by Edward Hunt MLC.
