Pennant and Palmer Street, isn't it ? I was just researching one of my dodgy relatives and it happens to be right around the corner from his house.

Mike Kelly Ha! Yes, I think your location is righter. Jolley's store was in that spot. The Hurstville Library has a copy of this image with extensive notes and research, indicating that this photo was taken in the winter of 1926 (between May and August) - libcatalogue.hurstville.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/spydus.exe/ENQ...(82845)&CF=PIC&SEARCH_FORM=PA&QRYTEXT=Roadworks,%20Forest%20Road%20Hurstville%20NSW,%201926 Ed. By 1930 Mr B. Jolley had expanded his premises to include an arcade and the newer art deco building seen in streetview but not here. Read all about it - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/132064136

Looking up King Street towards the intersection of King and Sussex. Photograph taken near the corner of Day Street. Cable tram tracks would indicate the picture was taken before 1900. The rather grand building on the corner was a branch of the former Bank of New South Wales (now Westpac) The workmen seem to be doing something with the cable tram tracks (which can be seen in the right foreground). The cable tram terminated at Erskine Street, after turning into Day Street (as did the electric trams when introduced in 1902 or 1903 (?); this was the city end of the line servicing the eastern suburbs. This area now covered by the 'City North' exit of the Western Distributor.

What a great image. I've seen a few of the Caledonian but not this one.

I'm almost 100% certain this was taken in 1900 - during the bubonic plague scare inspired cleanup of Sydney's streets.

pellethepoet I think you're right - the cable trams were still running then. What a great selection of pictures you supplied to support your argument, the picture of Kent Street is amazing and brought back many memories, I worked in one of the buildings shown (No 383) on the right (western) side in the 1970s and early 1980s - now its a car park! It had a wonderful lift dating back to 1900 or earlier all brass and wood, the gate had a most wonderful rattle. I think the lift-driver ("Taffie") was an original too!

It doesnt look like building tramtracks, it looks like cleaning up rubbish in the street. My guess would be during one of the ratcatching efforts c.1900.
